I almost didn’t get this post written in time to publish today because I was so busy playing Overwatch all weekend. I mean seriously, I had a four-day weekend and I did next to nothing…but I sure played a whole lot of Overwatch! I’m choosing not to see this as a bad thing, but as an opportunity to share the love with you all:P
I have so many thoughts about this game that it’s almost difficult to break them down into coherent sentences, but I’m going to try my best. What it all comes down to, though, is that Overwatch is freakin’ spectacular!
Blizzard’s latest masterpiece is a first-person shooter, which I tend to hate. However, the varied skills and weapons that each character sports, coupled with the need to adapt throughout the game by switching heroes, makes this FPS feel like so much more to me. As of right now, there are 21 heroes, and they are broken down into four classes: offense, which are quick and aggressive damage dealers; defense, which are all about crowd-control; tanks, which boast the highest health pools so that they can get in the thick of the fight; and supports, who help heal, shield, and all-around keep their teammates in the game.
The gameplay seems simple enough. Two teams of six face off to either attack or defend an objective. The attack team will attempt to capture a control point or escort a payload to its destination, while the defend team will try to stop them! Team composition is everything, and it’s essential to adapt to the map, the objectives, and the opposing team as you go. Adapting is easy enough since you can switch characters upon death if your team is in need of a change. For example, you might go from Pharah, the high-flying, rocket blasting offense character, to Mercy, the ‘guardian angel’ capable of resurrecting her teammates, if you find that your team is just too squishy without a healer.
My personal favorite is Lúcio, the funky Brazilian DJ who can skate along walls while dishing out speed boosts or heals to the team. The last time I checked, I’ve played about 25 hours and 14 of them have been with Lúcio. Compare that with my husband, who has played the same amount of time as I have but has only 6 hours on his most frequently played character. Whoops! My ability to adapt is not quite up to par as most of the higher level players that I’ve come across, but I’m making an effort!
There are 12 maps, all of which are gorgeous, and I’m constantly blown away by the level of detail in the characters and their movements. No joke, I think of this game as a work of art. It’s just so pretty. I didn’t want to bombard you all with thousands of screenshots quite yet but I mean, I might have to in the near future.
I almost dreaded showing this picture. Thirteen kills with twelve deaths? Twenty percent weapon accuracy? Eh, not such a good game for me. I did want to talk about this part of the game though, since I really love it. After every game, one player is shown making the ‘play of the game,’ which is usually a multi-kill or the well-timed use of a character’s ‘ultimate’ skill. All twelve players watch this, so it’s pretty exciting when you get to be the center of attention for a short time! Then we’re all brought to a screen where four of the most effective players of the match, winning or losing team alike, are shown and you can vote for them, which essentially just means you’re giving them a shout-out for doing a good job. And finally you’re brought to the screen shown in this picture, which displays your stats for the game and the medals you were awarded based on your gameplay. I think it’s a nice addition to the game, highlighting your awesomeness without seeming too competitive about it.
My big guilty pleasure right now is opening the loot boxes you’re awarded for every level gained. It’s a box full of random character skins, voice lines, sprays (you can tag all over the map with your character’s spray if that’s your thang), animations…just lots of fun things. You can also win gold from these boxes to use in the purchase of said skins, sprays, etc. Or you can use real money to buy more loot boxes, which my husband and I have done because we’re completely obsessed.
So there you have it! I’m not the best at explaining things so hopefully I hit on the important aspects of the game, but if not, you should definitely check out this well-written review. So how about you? Do any of you play Overwatch? I’d love to hear who your favorite character is!
